June/July 2024

Wedding season is in full swing, and we’re already obsessed with the showstopping events across Herts and Beds that are already taking place! Couples continue pushing the boundaries to capture their love stories and personalities perfectly. They’re thinking outside the box on ways to create memorable days and ultimate celebrations with loved ones.

Summer is a fabulous time of year to tie the knot for many reasons! Who doesn’t love the warmer weather and doesn’t get me started on the limitless colour palettes on offer? From neutral shades to pastel fantasies and bold pops of colour, you can’t go wrong!

If you’ve just become engaged, we recommend starting to plan early to avoid disappointment. Many suppliers get booked up early during this popular season, some one to two years in advance. Embrace nature with abundant florals, as summer offers unlimited options compared to other seasons. We’re talking roses, gardenias, carnations, sunflowers, hydrangeas, dahlias, peonies, sweet peas and more! It’s important to note that some don’t handle heat well and could wilt quickly, so ensure blooms are kept cool with plenty of water and shade when possible.

We all know the Great British weather can’t be trusted! Even if you’re exchanging vows at the peak of summer outside, it’s always essential to have a wet-weather backup plan in case of any summer showers – it’s better to be safe than sorry. Most venues will offer a space indoors as an alternative if the heavens open. Still, those opting for completely al fresco celebrations should consider covering such as a marquee or tipi. These structures are also perfect for heatwaves, providing plenty of shade if the sun beats down. In the late afternoon, utilise outdoor spaces by creating comfy outdoor settings so guests can sit back and relax while catching up with loved ones.

For catering, keep things light, fresh and crisp, as the last thing guests will want is a hearty, heavy meal in the heat before dancing the night away. Some popular options include picnics, hog roasts, BBQs, delicate seafood, afternoon teas and more! Ensure seasonal food is being used to ensure top flavour and taste. Keep everyone cool with a retro ice cream van, an iced coffee truck or frozen cocktails for an added extra. It’s essential that guests are hydrated with cold water, juices or even fresh lemonade throughout the day.

This issue is full of wedding inspiration from start to finish, covering all aspects of the planning process, from finding the perfect venue to dream-worthy gowns, the latest offers, beauty advice, venue styling and big-day bakes. It doesn’t stop there, as we also cover top honeymoon destinations worldwide for memorable trips together.

So, pull up a chair, grab a cuppa and get reading!

Barns and Farms

Edworth Manor

Just one mile south of Biggleswade, Edworth Manor is a working farm that one family has run for more than 200 years. Nearlyweds can expect personal service and practical experience from the team, who will help guide pairs through the planning process. Guests get a glimpse of farm life as they travel up the drive past grass meadows and tractors before reaching the venue. Couples often comment on how peaceful and tucked away the setting is. The meadow offers a perfect space for photos with a rural backdrop; couples are often snapped underneath the trees or in front of the traditional timber-clad barns.

The venue doesn’t have a ceremony license, but the 12th-century church is available for blessings with permission of the Churches Conservation Trust. Celebrant-led ceremonies occur in the 18th-century barn at Edworth Manor, a genuinely rustic space that’s one of the largest in the area with plenty of historic character. Guests are taken back by the oak timbers and attractive alcoves, which offer a fantastic canvas for couples to personalise as little or as much as they like. The barn is only available for a limited number of occasions during the summer months each year. Available for exclusive use only and on a dry-hire basis, lovebirds are given access well ahead of the day to style the space as they wish.

The recently restored The Old Granary is connected to the main barn, perfect for private dining receptions for up to 25 people. The Old Granary is available for booking all year round and can also be used for celebrant-led ceremonies with 40 loved ones or as a place for bridal parties to get ready. Both barns are served by a connected area for use by the external caterer. Double doors open out of the timber-clad barn onto a mown grass meadow, which couples can style for welcome drinks, garden games and outdoor catering.
